Proxy Locations: How to Choose, Change, and Verify Them

Why proxy location matters, how to select a country or city, how to change it after purchase, and how to verify your IP's real location.

Written by Alex Krasnov

Introduction

When you buy a proxy, the location you pick in the Country field determines the geographical origin of your IP address. This article covers why that choice matters, what options are available, and what to do when an IP checker shows a location you didn't expect.

Why location selection matters

Access to location-specific content. If your target is restricted to a certain country — streaming services, regional sites, local ad platforms — the proxy country must match. To reach a US-based website, choose a US proxy.

Optimal performance. Proxies closer to the server you're reaching generally give faster, more stable connections.

Privacy and anonymity. A location-specific proxy masks your real IP and makes you appear to browse from that region — useful for geo-specific testing or account management.

Note: Rotating residential Packages have all location possible.

When to choose "Any"

Leaving the location as Any is a reasonable choice when:

  • General use — your browsing isn't region-restricted.

  • Larger proxy pool — on backconnect rotating packages, "Any" gives you the widest pool. Availability still depends on current stock.

  • Testing and development — the specific location isn't a factor.

⚠️ Only use "Any" if your targets are not geo-restricted.

Selecting a location

Country level

Country selection is standard and available during checkout. If your preferred country is in stock, proxies are assigned accordingly (US, UK, Germany, and other international locations).

City and state level

City-level targeting is supported for static and rotating residential proxies, depending on plan and current inventory. For a specific city, contact support — the team can manually assign proxies to match your requirement.

If your location isn't listed

  • Choose a nearby region that still meets your needs.

  • Use a major hub (New York, London, Frankfurt) for reliable general performance.

  • Ask support whether the location can be added.

  • Rotating residential packages cover the widest range of locations.

How to change your location after purchase

This applies mainly to static private residential proxies, which can be swapped to another location such as Germany or the US, subject to availability.

  1. Decide on your target location — country, state, or city.

  2. Check availability — contact support or use your dashboard.

  3. Request the update — if available, your proxy is reassigned.

Why your IP may show the wrong location

Different websites and tools use different IP lookup databases. Those databases can be outdated, inconsistent, or built on different data sources, which produces conflicting results:

  • An IP purchased as US may appear as Honduras or Hong Kong in some lookup tools.

  • Different checkers can report different countries for the same IP.

  • Even static proxies with fixed IPs can show discrepancies, since the variable is the database, not the IP.

No IP lookup tool is 100% accurate — this is a limitation of geolocation databases in general, not a fault in the proxy.

How to verify the real location

  1. Cross-check several reputable lookup tools. If most report the intended location, the proxy is correctly geolocated for practical use.

  2. Use trusted checkers such as IPQS. See our blog post on Top IP Address Lookup Tools.

  3. Test on your actual target site. This is the only check that really matters — if the site behaves as expected, the proxy works for your use case.

  4. Contact support if discrepancies persist. We can confirm the IP's geolocation and issue a replacement IP if the mismatch causes real problems.

Best practices

  • Clear cookies and cache before accessing a platform through a proxy.

  • One proxy per account — and don't rotate multiple IPs through a single account. Both patterns raise ban risk.

  • Match the proxy to the purpose — select the intended use case (e.g. "Facebook") when ordering.

  • Use static residential for tasks needing high trust and stability, such as ad accounts or account management.

Limitations to be aware of

  • Proxies don't override behavioural algorithms. Platforms like TikTok weigh account activity more heavily than IP location.

  • Sudden changes look suspicious. Logging in from a new country or spending on ads at high speed can trigger security checks regardless of proxy quality.

FAQ

Can I choose a specific location like New York, California?
Yes, subject to availability. If it's unavailable, we'll offer alternatives.

Do you support city-level targeting for residential proxies?
Yes, for static and rotating residential. Contact support to request a specific city.

Can I get a list of available US static residential IPs?
Yes — request the list from support and choose from the available options.

How do I confirm my proxy is configured correctly?
If you've entered the IP and credentials and the connection works, the setup is correct. No further action is needed.
